I saw MPR’s FB post yesterday about Nat’l Pet Mem Day but couldn’t bring myself to write anything.

We said goodbye to our sweet Yoshi almost a month ago on August 17th.  I know everyone says their dog is the best, but she really was the best dog ever!

I knew the second I picked her up to bring her home to foster, we were meant to be. Foster failing was the best decision we ever made!  She changed our lives for the best & was the best sister ever to Sunny & most recently Mango (Dolly). She was a fabulous singer, aloof, demanding in all the right ways, gentle, so so sweet. Bossy when it came time for her to want a walk. Loved giving you her paw, putting herself to bed early & then coming back downstairs when she heard snacks or ice cream.

We had no idea what was to come with Yoshi when we brought Mango into our life. We wanted a younger dog to learn from Yoshi & Sunny. But, Mango and Yoshi were meant to be, somehow the most perfect timing. Like she stayed with us just to be there for Mango. Yosh was her “emotional support dog”.

Thank you so much for bringing her to us. Our time with her wasn’t nearly enough, but oh so cherished.  We miss her dearly <3

In January 2024 my husband and I adopted Zeke from Mountain Pet Rescue. We so appreciate and love this pup. He and my husband have become quite the pair! Thanks for letting us have him. Please pass this on to Kat, who was his foster, as we have lost her contact.

This picture is from a hike we took in Moab earlier this year.

Tomorrow is 3 months with Tess/Bailey, she is doing amazing – living her best Rocky Mountain West life so far! She starts each day (not so) patiently waiting for a long morning walk and follows that up with lots of snoozing and snuggling. She tirelessly guards the backyard from squirrel invaders when not tossing toys in the air and catching them herself. She and Nita are thick as well-behaved thieves — it’s really amazing to see how they have bonded.

Attached are some photos of smiles, adventures, and snuggles. I cannot tell you how grateful we are that you made it possible for us to adopt Tess! We’re so utterly in love with her sweet-, goofy-, bed-hogging-, dirt-rolling self!

We adopted Buddy from your rescue six years ago, and from the moment he joined our family, he became our heart and soul. He was everything we could have hoped for, gentle, loyal, endlessly loving, and so incredibly smart.

He protected our young son, River, like a true guardian, always watching over him with care and calm. He was the best snuggle buddy and a highly effective plate cleaner, even managing to sneak bites without us noticing for the longest time. He only barked when it really mattered, like when there was an animal on our land, always looking out for us with quiet confidence.

Buddy had a way of making everyone feel special, family, friends, the UPS driver, no one could escape his joyful, over-the-top greetings. He howled at the moon with us, said “I love you” on command, and could open doors with ease. He knew so many tricks we called him our little circus dog, clever, eager, and always up for impressing a crowd.

He was perfectly at home on our land in Leadville, running free but never straying far. He somehow always knew when to be energetic and when to just chill by our side.

To us, and to many in our community, Buddy was a legend. His love, loyalty, and personality were unmatched. Saying goodbye to him has left an enormous hole in our hearts. He will be deeply missed and truly impossible to replace.

Thank you for bringing Buddy into our lives, saving him, and giving him the chance to live his dream mountain dog life. Because of Mountain Pet Rescue, he spent his days surrounded by wide open spaces, fresh air, and the people who loved him most. A donation has been made in his memory, with deep gratitude for the joy, protection, and unconditional love he gave us. Thank you for the countless dogs you’ve rescued, Buddy was one of the lucky ones, and so were we.

With love and thanks,
Megan, Dan, and River

A Poem for Bodhi I hope I come back as a Tabernash dog, With fur tangled by mountain winds, Where the pine trees whisper my name to be let outside. And peace is found in every stir. I hope I run on trails we know, Soft paws on earth running free, Chasing sunbeams and skiers through fields of snow, Boundless joy in all I see. Bodhi, I hope I’m loved the way you were, With tiny ears and my head so wide, With fires warm and beds so soft, And always Sammy by my side. You lived it well, sweet Bodhi boy. With new legs, Forevermore, you’ll roam on the rainbow bridge. Till we meet again, Forever our good boy.
